Things I did yesterday:
Got up at 7:30am (blaargh!) and carpooled into town for grading at 9am. We did warm-ups for an hour or so then they got to the yellow belts at about 10:30, my usual waking hour. I managed to not muck anything up too much and Master Chan commented that the group was better than the past few yellow belt gradings.
Bused back because I would have to wait for the entire thing to finish for a ride. Stopped by Theuns' who'd said he was going to be making Olie bollen but the yeast hadn't risen yet so he was finishing an ep of Supernatural. Gave him a bit of a shoulder rub and cut his hair for him.
Got dropped off home and inhaled lunch and slept for an hour or so.
Went out to go to Ant's b-day which was meeting up in Poplar lane at 11. The bus I was meant to catch drove past me coz it was too full, for the second time in a couple of weeks (grr they should run more buses then) but I ran into Sam, Tree, Stac and Adam on the next bus who were going to the same thing as me so that was sweet.
We eventually ended up at the Twisted Hop. Ran into an old friend who's wedding was the only one I've ever been to. Bought a ginger tom. Good conversation etc, more compliments on the new glasses (oh and I have soft hands apparently), Tree went around befriending strangers..
She found a guy who played a recorder for her while we all sat at our big table, then Ant and about two thirds of us wandered off to Sol square and the guys I'd ran into on the bus and Theuns and I stayed with Tree and her new friend who was this old english sounding guy with glasses. Turns out he could play the violin too, quite nicely, although he got to some tricky stuff and realised he was far far too drunk, lol. We offered to buy him a drink to continue playing but Theuns discovered they'd stopped serving at that point and gave him some of the $100/kg choc he'd been feeding us, instead.
We then proceeded to Sol square, musician in tow, though he left when we got there coz he was tired. And went dancing at the Culture Club, nifty place actually, lots of 80s music, room on the dancefloor without being dead and good seats with pacman games. Upon noticing my 4 inch high boots Anthony informed me that he was really turned on, haha (and that he wished Cheuky was there). Got to about 2am and I caught a ride home from Theuns.
Was gonna go plonk but ended up having a good long spilly convo with my flatmate Michael til 5:30ish and went to sleep finally at 6am.

Tree turns to Anthony and asked loudly and earnestly: Are you gay?
Anthony: ..no, actually.
Tree: *sighs disappointedly*
Ant: Well... I could pretend if you want me to?
Tree: Why?
Ant: Well, you sounded disappointed...
Earlier tonight as we were walking from the bus exchange to Poplar Lane...
Two uniformed dudes in fluorescent jackets walk past us as we approach a crossing, I hadn't noticed but one of them only had one arm, until I hear from behind me the innocent, girlish, and almost british sounding voice of Tree proclaiming
"You forgot your arm, sir!"

Theuns fixed my back! *radiates internet hugs at him*
He was rather impressed at how screwed my pecs were, too, heh whoopsie.
Minor injuries aquired today:
Bruising aquired from having my elbow kicked into my hipbone, which apparently bloody hurts, especially if you're a skinny bugger like me.
Slightly burnt mouth because apparently when I go 8 hours without eating 'ow my tummy hurts' overrides 'ow, my mouth hurts' enough to inhale two bowls of meat/vege goo and be damned with how hot it is. I is teh smrt.
But now I am a happy cat(hy).
*plonk* Sleeptime.

Math264 (Multivariate calculus&differential equations) B+
Phys 281 (Laboratory Techniques) - A-
Phys 311 (Quantum Mecahnics)- A
I'm actually fairly happy with a B+ on that paper, calculus historically not being my strong point. Bit disappointed with the A, quantum is my best subject and I got 96% on the test so the exam must have been epic fail, and my 300 level GPA _actually matters_. Ah well.
This semester I have:
Phys 312 Applied Electromagnetism
Math342 Applications of Complex variables
Math 222 Groups and Symmetry
Phys 282 Experimental Physics
312 has a shitty/disorganized lecturer who I (and apperently a bunch of other people) find it hard to learn from.
342 looked pretty intimidating but has been quite fun so far.
222 I haven't learnt anything new in yet because they're introducing stuff from 221, but promises to be a cruisy and interesting paper.
282, meh same as 281, tedious but not overly challenging labs I have to get over with with to major in Phys.

Your result for Which fantasy writer are you? ...
Philip Pullman (b.1946)
15 High-Brow, -21 Violent, 29 Experimental and 21 Cynical!
Congratulations! You are High-Brow, Peaceful, Experimental and Cynical! These concepts are defined below.
Philip Pullman was already a prominent author of children's books when he published his most praised work to date, the trilogy known as His Dark Materials (1995-2000). In this work, set both in parallel worlds and our own, Pullman made a courageous attempt to write a book for young readers which incorporated a whole vision of the universe, as well as a discussion of ethical issues. He managed to combine this with a burst of thought-provoking and entertaining imagination, bringing to life a Europe where the church is still in control, "souls" that have been externalised as animal presences, intelligent, sentient polar bears and much more. The series have been described as a sort of "anti-Narnia", as Pullman's attempt to write an updated variant of the kind of books C S Lewis, whom Pullman has criticized for having racist, misogynic and preaching tendencies, wanted to write. His Dark Materials has also spawned some controversy among Christians, who see the the work as an attack against Christianity, Pullman being one of Britain's most outspoken atheists. Other Christians have, however, claimed to have found spirituality in the books.
Either way, Pullman's combination of renewal and expansion of the genre, his profound messages on the value of life and his refusal to under-estimate his young readers' ability to see life as it is makes Pullman one of the most interesting and important writers of modern fantasy.
You are also a lot like Tove Jansson.
If you want something some action, try Gene Wolfe.
If you'd like a challenge, try your exact opposite, J R R Tolkien.
Go me? :-)
I guess that being happy and confident and shit thing really does project itself.
Haha, just got meta-compliment, win. I know some cool people : )

Actually the last semester has been more productive than the one before that in a few different ways. Learning things rocks.

Also had a look at what my semester one timetable will be like-
mon- 11-12
tues- 10-12
wed- 10-11, 2-3
thur/fri-10-11, 2-5
Sweet.
Papers that should be fun this year- 300 level Quantum phys and Cyrptography, and group theory. (Ok, and also very involved for the former).
Labs I'm told are cruisy compared to first year, not overly looking forward to 300 level Applied Electromagnetism, but at least Dharam Vir (a lecturer who got a standing ovation from a first year class) takes that and I'm told it's not exactly very applied under him.
Fingers crossed to keep the GPA to get into hons...

It feels like it's been a lot longer than a month since christmas, and I'm left second guessing a lot of the decisions I made. :-/
Don't you just hate it when not being able to talk to a person you confide in when things are getting you down is the thing that's getting you down?
Had my birthday party on Sat, the day before my actual birthday. It's the first thing I've hosted at our place, but it worked pretty well for 10-15 people, we ended up going outside 'cause of the heat anyway. There was geeking and hilarity. And being a cheap drunk is somewhat useful :-) Birthday loot from the weekend- money from parents, a hat, and a nice pair of stud earrings.
I'm currently doing a Matlab summer paper, which, despite being somewhat interesting in that I haven't really done this sort of thing before, has been a little full-on (10+hours of labs a week, plus at least that in homework), left me with rather more RSI and back pain than I'd like, and not exactly dreading it's end. On the plus side, it should be an easy A.
